Food Factory Layout Design: what it involves

A factory layout submitted with a licence application is read by a technical officer who is looking for specific things: whether raw material and finished goods can cross, whether personnel enter clean areas through a proper change sequence, whether waste leaves without passing through production, and whether the air handling supports the classification claimed.

A drawing produced by a general architect rarely answers those questions, because they are regulatory questions rather than architectural ones. We produce the full drawing set with those answers built in.

How we work

The process, stage by stage

Indicative durations for a file where documents arrive on time. We tell you at the outset which stage is most likely to slip in your case.

    Requirement capture

    3 to 5 days

    We establish the product mix, capacity and regulatory scope, and translate them into the areas and classifications the plant must contain.

  2. 2

    Block layout and flow design

    1 to 2 weeks

    Areas are blocked out and material, personnel and waste flows are resolved so that no cross-contamination path remains. This is reviewed with you before detailing.

  3. 3

    Detailed drawing set

    2 to 3 weeks

    Civil, HVAC zoning, electrical, plumbing, equipment general arrangement, epoxy or flooring and false ceiling drawings are produced from the approved block layout.

    Compliance annotation

    3 to 5 days

    Drawings are annotated with area, classification and pressure cascade so the licensing officer can read the compliance position directly from the sheet.

    Revision after departmental comment

    As required

    If the department raises a layout observation, we revise and resubmit as part of the same engagement.

Frequently asked questions

Can you work with a building that already exists?

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. We assess what the existing shell allows, and propose the minimum intervention that makes it licensable rather than a redesign for its own sake.

Do you supply drawings in CAD?

Yes. You receive editable CAD files along with PDFs, so your contractor can work from them and your file copy stays consistent with what is built.

Will the layout be accepted by the department?

We design against the applicable schedule and annotate the compliance position clearly, and we handle any layout observation the department raises. No consultant controls the department's decision, but a drawing that answers their questions before they ask is rarely the reason a file stalls.

How is a GMP layout different from a normal factory layout?

A normal layout optimises for production efficiency. A GMP layout also has to prevent cross-contamination and mix-ups through physical separation, unidirectional flow, controlled change sequences and an air regime that supports the classification. Efficiency is designed within those constraints, not ahead of them.
